Does collagen help crow's feet?
Placebo-controlled trials that measured crow's feet, the lines that fan out from the outer corner of your eye when you smile, found a difference in favour of the collagen groups. Researchers use a wider word for the same neighbourhood, periorbital, meaning the skin around the eye, and both words turn up in the studies below.
The placebo-controlled trials on this page that looked there found a difference. In a trial of 64 women aged 40 to 60, crow's-feet wrinkling was significantly better than placebo at 12 weeks. The collagen group took 1,000 mg a day of low-molecular-weight fish collagen peptide.1
A second trial, in 114 women aged 45 to 65, measured the size of the lines, and eye-wrinkle volume was significantly lower than placebo after 4 weeks and after 8 weeks (about 20%). The collagen group took 2.5 g of collagen peptides a day.2
Each study used its own amount, its own collagen and its own way of scoring a line. For wrinkles across the whole face, see what collagen does for fine lines.
Which trials measured wrinkles at the eye?
Four randomised, placebo-controlled collagen studies in women took a wrinkle reading at the eye: a trial of 114 women on 2.5 g of collagen peptides, one of 64 women on 1,000 mg of fish collagen peptide, one of 71 women on 3,000 mg of fish-scale collagen peptides, and one of 34 women on a syrup with 4 g of hydrolysed fish collagen.
About 20% lower than placebo
The reading here was the volume of the wrinkles at the eye. It was significantly lower than placebo after 4 weeks and after 8 weeks (about 20%). The collagen group had 2.5 g of collagen peptides a day.2
114 women aged 45 to 65 · randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled
Crow's-feet wrinkling significantly better than placebo
This trial tested 1,000 mg a day of low-molecular-weight fish collagen peptide. At the 12-week visit, crow's-feet wrinkling was significantly better in the collagen group than in the placebo group.1
64 women aged 40 to 60 · randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled
Periorbital wrinkles fell significantly versus placebo
The women drank 20 ml a day of a drink holding either 3,000 mg of fish-scale collagen peptides or placebo. Periorbital wrinkles fell significantly versus placebo over the 12 weeks.3
71 healthy women aged 30 to 60 · randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind
Periorbital wrinkle area decreased versus placebo with a combination syrup
A liquid syrup, 10 mL daily, provided 4 g of hydrolysed fish collagen plus coenzyme Q10, vitamin C, vitamin A and biotin. Periorbital wrinkle area decreased versus placebo. The result belongs to the syrup as a whole.4

What each study gave, who took part, what was measured at the eye and when.
| What was taken each day | Who took part | Reading at the eye | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.5 g of collagen peptides2 | 114 women aged 45 to 65 | Eye-wrinkle volume significantly lower than placebo | After 4 weeks and after 8 weeks (about 20%) |
| 1,000 mg of low-molecular-weight fish collagen peptide1 | 64 women aged 40 to 60 | Crow's-feet wrinkling significantly better than placebo | 12 weeks |
| A 20 ml drink with 3,000 mg of fish-scale collagen peptides3 | 71 healthy women aged 30 to 60 | Periorbital wrinkles fell significantly versus placebo | 12 weeks |
| 10 mL of a liquid syrup with 4 g of hydrolysed fish collagen plus coenzyme Q10, vitamin C, vitamin A and biotin4 | 34 healthy women aged 40 to 65 | Periorbital wrinkle area decreased versus placebo | 12 weeks |
Three of these studies also looked beneath the surface or beyond the eye. In the trial of 114 women, skin samples taken after 8 weeks held 65% more procollagen type I and 18% more elastin in the collagen group than in the placebo group.2 In the fish-scale peptide trial, facial skin moisture and elasticity rose in the collagen group.3 In the syrup trial, dermis density increased versus placebo.4
Has hyaluronic acid been tested on crow's feet?
Yes, hyaluronic acid has been tested on crow's feet in one trial that recruited for exactly that, a 12-week randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 60 Japanese men and women aged 22 to 59 with crow's-feet wrinkles. The group on 120 mg a day of hyaluronic acid with a molecular weight of 300 kDa had a lower wrinkle volume ratio than placebo at 8 weeks.5 That is the amount this study used. Our guide to hyaluronic acid you swallow has the rest.

The earliest change at the eye was measured at week 4, when eye-wrinkle volume was significantly lower than placebo in the trial of 114 women. A study can only report on the days it booked a measurement, so these are recorded dates, one study at a time.
- Week 4 and week 8. In the trial of 114 women, eye-wrinkle volume was significantly lower than placebo at both checks (about 20%).2
- Four weeks after the last dose. The same trial measured once more after the women had stopped. The effect on eye-wrinkle volume was still there.2
- Week 12. The crow's-feet result in the trial of 64 women was recorded at 12 weeks.1 The fish-scale peptide trial3 and the syrup trial4 each ran for 12 weeks as well.
Our own user trial asked women instead of measuring them. Those taking our liquid marine collagen reported visible results in as little as 4 weeks, with further improvement by week 8.6 That answer covers the trial in general, not the eye area alone. The longer view across skin, hair and nails is in how long collagen takes to work.
What about collagen for under eyes?
For under the eyes, the collagen studies here measured lines around the eye, and periorbital wrinkles fell significantly versus placebo in a 12-week trial of fish-scale collagen peptides. Periorbital means around the eye, so the fish-scale peptide trial3 and the syrup trial4 both report on wrinkles in that zone. The trial of 114 women measured the volume of eye wrinkles.2 The trial of 64 women scored crow's feet, at the outer corner.1
For the under-eye area, as for crow's feet, the evidence is wrinkle readings taken at the eye in placebo-controlled trials.
What did skin imaging show around the eye?
Skin imaging showed a visible reduction in eye wrinkles in a clinical study of our liquid marine collagen, in which 10 women took it daily for 8 weeks and had their skin analysed before and after.6
The first pair below comes from that study, with the wrinkle lines the analysis picked out traced in green.

Left: from the 8-week clinical study of 10 women taking our liquid marine collagen daily, with detected wrinkle lines marked in green. Right: a participant in the 8-week user trial of our liquid marine collagen, photographed before and after. The figure is the share of the 106 women in that trial who gave that answer.
More pairs from both studies are gathered in collagen before and after.
